I had been communicating with Wigan Infirmary by email for 10 years and because as soon as I received a message I was able to reply straight away said in future I had to correspond using the postal service.

I just don't understand how they think they can dictate on this. The trust which I was scrutinising tried switching to sending letters once they realised I was making progress too quickly via email. I demanded they switch back. They did.pic.twitter.com/PT9S49v9ax

I'm glad of the time letter writing gives me. I don't find all their political manoeuvring easy to deal with, so I need time to think. (It's one of the difficulties that leaves me thinking I have Asperger's.)

Important correspondence, it takes me 10x longer reviewing it as it does writing it. I constantly tweak phrases, add things, reframe things. We can't do that in person or by phone and given the outrageous word games these people play, they need verbally pinning down in a corner!

And unless you have other reasons to suspect, I wouldn't diagnose yourself with anything based purely upon interacting with the NHS et al. They drive us all into questioning our sanity at one point or another, let alone finding it a challenge. It's not just you.. :)

No, it's not the only reason. If you read something like Tony Attwood's book, it's like the story of my life. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Guide-Aspergers-Syndrome-ebook/dp/B0050IY61G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1537442701&sr=8-1&keywords=attwood+asperger …

Fair enough then. All I'll say is that it's not always a bad thing to be different. You have to be on the periphery of a bell curve if you want to be the best at something. :)

I'd like an assessment, but there's not much point in asking if I can't rely on getting an honest one.

I also think it's worth considering what interventions come with it and whether you'd be willing to consent to them. If you don't want the interventions, then acquiring the diagnosis can become academic from a clinical perspective.

Yes, I'm 60 now, so it's a bit late for anything much, but I just think I need the peace of mind that knowing would bring.

Well, that's a whole other perspective to a clinical one. Only you can decide what's best for you there. :)
