The ONS stats lag way behind the daily figures announced by the UK government for hospital deaths in England, but have added to the already substantial death toll. The most recent figures say there were 20 care home deaths in England and Wales in the week ending March 27.

England's Chief Medical Officer asked about some of these concerns in today's press briefing said: 'Everybody who sadly dies, the doctor will make an assessment based on her or his view about what the cause of death is, that’s what the death certificate says in all cases.'

A huge burden on GPs mean they may not have seen a patient leading up to their death - or the patient may have been seen by someone else. Our whistleblower says there have been 'dozens and dozens of errors' from well-meaning GPs on death certificates.
