Very sad to hear today of the death of sculptor . He was best known for his concrete murals, many of which are now listed, and whose preservation the C20 Society is honoured to have been able to campaign for. He was a friend of the Society, and an amazing man.

Nails (1987) by Peter Logan. Nice to see this wind mobile cleared of vegetation and turning in the breeze today. Commissioned by for their Homebase site in Bath

You may remember this one, Scunthorpe's 1963 co-op pharmacy, but here's the pic again to highlight its presence as Feb 2020 Building of the Month, check out the story at

Anyone know if this sculpture, that was on an office block in Slough (Windsor Road), was a ? This photo’s apparently from ‘84. I remember it from the 70s - it was removed from the building years before it was demolished.

I love these. My childhood feels like it was full of them. They were solid, and hopeful.

a huge influence to public art in the 60s and 70s. His Grade II listed totems known as 'minute men' arrived at in 66-67, for students, staff and public to enjoy - "I want [visitors] to talk about them, laugh at them, even grumble at them.."

John Russell wrote the article 'The Colourful Crusade of William Mitchell', for the Sunday Times colour supplement (1962), stating that the artist wanted to make 'Britain a brighter place to live in.' It has been an incredible journey that has impacted on so many people's lives.

Dear William Mitchell fans, sorry to have such bad news. Sadly Bill passed away on Thursday. Thankfully he only had a short illness and was surrounded by family at his home. At some point, plans will be put in place for a celebration of his life, and I will keep you posted.

An announcement about the consultation should be made in early Feb. It would be great to see all fans of submit views to make sure this artwork is preserved in the city and moved to a prominent new site

Very sad news but what a legacy of public art. One of 's works in Sheffield, sadly not listed, is currently under threat and needs support to be preserved. Details below ⬇️

This is sad news indeed. William Mitchell’s incredible body of work continues to be a much loved delight. What a legacy he leaves us. Amongst my favourites are those on the front of Gibberd’s Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral.

my personal favourite of Mitchell’s work is his fibreglass doors to the metropolitan cathedral in liverpool, a tetramorph of the angel, lion, ox and eagle symbols of the four evangelists. The pure camp of them rolling open at the Easter Vigil service will remain with me always

Sad news. You can see some of William Mitchell’s murals inside Bradford’s Kirkgate Market. William also made a large mural for the former Bradford & Bingley HQ, which is currently in storage. It’s hoped some of this work can be brought back into the public realm again soon.
