Inessential work is often the work that makes the other sectors generally much more productive without outside observers really understanding what is going on. And sometimes it really is just feeding a status game that only exists at scale in a rich country.

Right, and that category includes lots of jobs with scalable outputs and tournament-style comp, so the best performers make extraordinary amounts.

If its "essential" maybe theres pressure to become do-able by anyone. A critical system shouldn't have rare parts, so labor as a commodity (rather than specialized education) means your essential work gets done even if you have to change staff.. but "anyone can" means lower wages
