Mike, I’m a 10 year San Mateo resident. While I mostly agree with this, they in fact are building tons of housing. Problem is they keep building office space too! Traffic thru our little town is now horrible as everyone commutes to and from here!
-
-
-
Yeah isn't it like a 10-to-1 ratio of new jobs to housing units
-
You might be right. But the building of everything has got to pause! Our side streets are filled with parked cars and traffic!
-
It's free to park anywhere downtown after 6pm, and $1.25 per hour during the busiest time. San Mateo has 100,000 residents. Maybe if they charged more for parking you'd be able to find a space
-
I’m talking about parking in residential areas!
-
Then push for a residential permit program with a high price for permits, charge for on-street parking, or make it easier for people to bike around. Same principle applies. San Mateo requires 2.3 parking spaces (+ the cars) for every new 3 bedroom apartment. Maybe try lowering
-
In any event, I'd rather have a parking crisis than a housing crisis. Go talk to the principal of your kids school and ask how far their teachers have to commute every day
-
Also studies have shown that not building housing makes traffic worse, not better!https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2018/06/21/study-lack-of-housing-means-more-traffic-not-less …

Ultimately, we have to encourage dispersal of jobs and people to less populated areas. The election of Trump is due, in large part to the segregation of our economy. Our Federal system will collapse if all the intellectual jobs are in a handful of regions of a few states.
-
California voted for Clinton. The effect of preventing housing in San Mateo will be more housing in Gilroy and Brentwood (other California cities) and people making very long commutes to San Mateo. Forcing people to move *away* from job opportunities is a bad economic sign

One supporter lives in a building that would be illegal to build today because it's too tall https://twitter.com/BelmontRenters/status/1019116405847805952 … Average downzoning supporter has an untaxed gain of $1m. I pay more in rent than these folks mortgage+property taxeshttps://twitter.com/BelmontRenters/status/1019125152607420416 …

A bright spot is that the top comment on the story said that speakers were mostly pro housing.

I've worked in housing policy for over 30 years. Lived briefly in San Diego where there are fewer restrictions. Prices are up there too, but not nearly as much as in north. I would not want to be a non-wealthy person in the north nowadays. Rents are insane! YOU NEED MORE HOMES!

Prop 13 needs to go, as it creates a perverse incentive and unneeded benefit to the NIMBY homeowners

That shouldn’t even be allowed. End local control and have region-wide policies that will be designed to promote affordable housing, not exclusivity and property values of the few.

I still think that's their right until they pull the economic rug out from under themselves. Not so dissimilar from ridiculous behavior of auto unions in Detroit circa 1970--made economic conditions so bad that the industry just up and left.
-
All of the people pushing for it are homeowners, who don't bear the costs. Renters and young people pretty much uniformly oppose limits, because they get the brunt of higher rents and home prices Not really fair for those people to suffer as well
-
They bear the costs--their housing values are tied to demand for their housing, which is dependent on strong employment demand. If the employers leave...
-
That's a cost you pay once when you sell your home. Mortgage + Property taxes are basically constant while you own it. Average San Mateo home has increased in value by 5x since 1990, when downzoning started
-
Rent for a 2 bedroom has increased from $900 to $3500
