I 100% want to read your prologues. I want to know why your character hates the person they're going to fall in love with. Or what happened when they were 13 that made them fall for their best friend. I don't care how trivial. I. WILL. READ. IT.

No, that's Hunger Games. A Caucus is when all the children are given an aptitude test at age sixteen and sorted into factions based on their core skill sets.

--the whole milieu. Whether it was Gone with the Wind (book OR film) or Godfather, people wanted to immerse deeply, so you could spend twenty pages on the front porch while we learn about the South. And so on. Now things are different, & there's more competition for leisure time

One interesting point someone made in a workshop once (sorry for vague, my memory is..egh) is that before we had travel tv and millions of books and the internet, books were also a way for people to "travel." Same with older movies. Much more time was spent showing--

That’s fine! Honestly none of this is a value judgement either way, just an observation on how the norms have shifted. I just find it interesting!

Not saying that there's ANYTHING wrong with slow burn but...girl....I don't have as much time on my hands as I did when I was a kid so unless there's exploding tension keeping me hooked I just cannot devote my LIFE to a slow burn 😂😂 I CANNOT.

People took Чеховское ружьё (Chekhov's gun) to heart, too much. Nothing can be introduced that's not relevant, and everything relevant has to be almost immediately so.

hell yeah i feel this. i read a lot of midcentury sci-fi and the lack of plot is STARK in some things. so many of the Great Sci-Fi Classics are less of a story to entertain us and more of a setting to ask us a question.

This stresses me out sometimes because readers sometimes expect disabled and neurodivergent characters to already be fully evolved and ready to take on every task from page one.

Idk sometimes I read a book and I’m like oh these two might be cute together and then on the next page they start making out and I’m like ????? Excuse me you’re supposed to pine for each other for 12 more chapters.

You can see this in film adaptations of older books especially. The Hobbit movies turned nearly every scene into an action sequence of some sort.

I absolutely notice this reading older fantasy, even from just five or six years ago! So many worldbuilding digressions and quiet notes that are at odds with TENSION TENSION TENSION

Mr Rogers absolutely knew that this was the direction TV was going and was implacably opposed to it It wasn't just personal aesthetics it was a whole theory of childhood development thing, the psychology of impatience and instant gratification
