The Deepwater Horizon oil disaster was the largest oil spill this century. In its aftermath, BP paid out over $60 billion in the US. We can now report Mexico quietly accepted a $25 million payment to clear BP of responsibility for polluting its waters.https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/nathanieljanowitz/bp-mexico-deepwater-horizon-oil?bftwnews&utm_term=4ldqpgc#4ldqpgc …

The $25 million payment cleared BP of any responsibility. The oil giant has recently won multi-million dollar oil drilling deals in Mexico.

After the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded in 2010, BP paid out more than $60 billion in the US. Meanwhile, the Mexican government was slow to react to the spill, waiting until the last minute before filing a lawsuit against BP.

Less than 5 years later, Mexico’s government dropped its lawsuit and accepted a confidential settlement of $25.5m relating to the Deepwater Horizon disaster.

Mexico’s government appears to have ignored evidence that could have been used to bolster its case against BP. There were also reports by scientific institutions that were classified by the government, keeping the potential extent of the damage from the public.

Mexico’s government also spent millions funding 22 scientific studies on the impact of the spill that it did not introduce as evidence in its lawsuit, and withheld them from Mexican citizens.

In shielding the extent of the damage, they also kept evidence from more than 10,000 fishermen who sued the oil giant for compensation in a separate lawsuit. Those fisherman saw nothing from BP, and appear to have nothing from the $25.5m settlement.

BP spent at least $60 billion in total related to the 2010 spill, more than $10 billion of which went to affected US fishermen and businesses. Meanwhile, not a single peso has gone to an affected Mexican fisherman.

The Mexican government simultaneously handed numerous lucrative energy contracts to BP. How lucrative? The contracts include five oil-drilling sites, two natural gas pipeline contracts, and a plan to build 1,500 BP-branded gas stations.

Those contracts were signed under the energy reform program put forward by outgoing president Enrique Peña Nieto, who is due to leave office in about two months. The extent of the damage to Mexican waters is still publicly unknown.https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/nathanieljanowitz/bp-mexico-deepwater-horizon-oil?bftwnews&utm_term=4ldqpgc#4ldqpgc …
