I was surprised at how many stops we made doing damage assessments on Monday when I pulled up my driving data. This follows the damage path from the three January 12th tornadoes that struck #ButtsCountyGa last week. Each dot represents a damaged home and we’re just 1 of 3 teams.

After the storms and tornadoes a few days ago, it was nice to see this small rainbow over Jackson this morning. Today we are meeting with our contracted debris management and monitoring companies about cleanup efforts. We were fortunate to have this service already on retainer.

All recycling centers except Worthville are open today until 7PM this evening. Worthville will remain closed at least a week until repairs to equipment and power distribution can be repaired. Compactors cannot be run at this site until this is accomplished.

The January 12th storm that went through our county on Thursday may have actually spawned three separate tornadoes, all from the main storm that moved through. Teams doing assessments yesterday and handing out tarps noted disconnected paths from the system in plotting its path.

We’ve been in contact with power companies and they ask for patience. Crews from several states are in our county assisting, and the power is slowly being restored. It is estimated that 400+ utility poles were broken and in some areas the entire power grid has to be rebuilt.

We’re out doing tornado assessment today. We’ve seen a lot of damage but we’ve also seen a lot of kindness too such as when our local downtown @PapaJohns donates pizzas to feed our public works employees out working to clear roads. Thank you to these heroes helping our heroes

Daylight paints a different reality than what we could see last night. As our public works crews cleared the roads, they found a lot more damage to homes near Jackson Lake. Fortunately there were no injuries here and damage such as this was more confined and not widespread.

More weather damage from yesterday’s tornadoes at Master Brand cabinets at I-75 and Georgia Highway 16. Most of the roof membrane was peeled away from the building and is in the loading yard adjacent to the manufacturing facility. Broken water pipes complicated matters #gawx

Our crews are working through the north end of the county now. The damage at Cherokee Lake estates is much worse. I’m seeing fully grown trees completely toppled and others sheared off about 25 feet up. Some mobile homes have been damaged badly.

Numerous county roads remain impassable and clearing work has been slowed down until power companies can clear lines and ensure safe operations for the fire department and public works crews. Damage assessment teams will begin at first light to assess damage and conditions.
