Our inquiries examine responses to children & young people, identify where improvements are needed, & recommend change - they're vital in highlighting where systems need to better recognise & realise children's rights. If you're interested, check out these roles...

Sad news. On behalf of my son - now 13 by the way - I say RIP Pingu.

Sad to hear of the passing of #Pingu voice actor Carlo Bonomi. Sure, that programme was cute and funny to me as a child, but considering we never understood a word being said, the empathy I would feel for those animated animals was remarkable and I have this gentleman to thank. twitter.com/EditorJamada/s…

Testing positive to #COVID19 in Victoria (or living with someone who does) means you’ll be spending the next seven days isolating Check out this great resource for managing COVID at home

Young people are most likely to be impacted by the new strains of Omicron due to being the most socially active for study, work and play. 😷 Check out some of the supports available if you’re affected, and for more tips and resources visit: yacvic.org.au/blog/preparing @VicGovDH

Pink, yellow and red gradient background with text that reads:

We’re currently seeing new strains of Omicron in the community called BA.4 and BA.5. Those of us aged 20-39 are most likely to be affected because we’re so active in our work, study and social lives.
Not only are these strains more infectious than previous Omicron waves, they’re also pretty good at overcoming your existing immunity. Because of this, we’re seeing a rise in COVID cases and hospitalisation.
Pink, yellow and red gradient background with text that reads:

This doesn’t mean vaccinations aren’t effective! Being up to date with your vax can reduce your risk of getting seriously sick, which is super important right now with the current infection rate and rising hospitalisations.
Old faithfuls like wearing a good quality mask, indoor ventilation, testing regularly and getting boosted are all important here. But what support is available now if you do catch COVID now? Hasn’t it all dried up?
(Spoiler: nope!)
Pink, yellow and red gradient background with text that reads:

Financial support
Pandemic leave disaster payments are back for if you’ve lost at least 8 hours work. There’s also the Victorian Government’s Sick Pay Guarantee for sick and casual workers.

Help with power, gas or water bills
Check if you’re eligible for the Utility Relief Grant Scheme, or ask your utility provider about payment plans. Also, concession card holders are eligible for certain discounts and rebates (google ‘DELWP concessions and rebates’).

Somewhere to stay in an emergency
Emergency accommodation is still available to COVID-positive people who need help to isolate safely because they use shared facilities, or have safety, wellbeing or other health issues. Call the 24/7 COVID hotline: 1800 675 398.
Pink, yellow and red gradient background with text that reads:

If you’re 18+ and immunocompromised
Antiviral medications to treat COVID are now available on the PBS. They’re oral meds you take for a few days, and can reduce your chance of hospitalisation anywhere between 30% and 80%!
Any GP can prescribe them if you’re eligible, and there’s discount if you’ve got a healthcare card.

Bariers to GP access?
You can also get COVID meds from a community health centre, GP respiratory clinics, or by doing telehealth with an available doctor outside of your area who can then send you an e-script.

Barriers to medication access? See a GP now to prep a ‘COVID plan’ for how you’ll access COVID meds if you need to. How will they prescribe them? Will a friend pick them up or will you get pharmacy delivery? (See if you can get free delivery with the Home Medicine Service!)

Grateful to for chatting to me about the new Child Safe Standards, and why they're important to help keep children safe from harm and abuse. Stronger standards, safer children. #SaferChildrenVic

Such an alarming report. Thank you for shining light on it recently. Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) contributing factors to mental health disorders in adulthood, suicidality, self harm & addiction. Our young people are our future.

64% of young people in Youth Justice have experienced emotional abuse, 62% neglect, 46% have experienced family violence and 45% physical abuse. 92% have at least one adverse childhood experience. Are we criminalising childhood trauma? twitter.com/AICriminology/…

Appreciate hearing different views on what's needed to make our youth justice system safer - for everyone. I've seen improvements in recent years but no question more is needed to build a sophisticated system able to meet the complex needs of young people in YJ.

Violence is never ok. But sending children to adult prison as a form of 'punishment' is not only against the law, but it is only ever going to entrench criminal behaviour and do more harm - both to the children & to community safety. We can do better, Victoria.

The Children’s commissioner is scathing about transferring a 16 and 17 year old to max security at Port Phillip Prison. Says it’s disturbing. The two teenagers are yet to be charged over serious assault of two managers at Malmsbury YJ centre abc.net.au/news/2022-05-3

A pleasure to share Victoria's experience of implementing legislated Child Safe Standards & the reportable conduct scheme with today. It is my firm view these regulatory schemes improve children's safety from abuse in institutional settings & are sorely needed.

Our Principal Commissioner @BuchananLiana notes her commitment to sharing Victoria's experience of the Child Safe Standards and the Reportable Conduct Scheme to, in the Commission of Inquiry's wording, 'shorten the journey' to achieving child safety.
