Great question! Apparently there's a spider beetle (genus Gibbium) with fused elytra (the hardened outer wings) that can't fly. Anyone know of any others?

Check out the big feathery antennae on this beetle! Looks like a close match to the Feather-horned Beetle (Rhipicera femorata)

I'm encouraging people in Australia to upload any pictures of leaf miners (or suspected leaf miners!) onto this project. This will contribute to research on their diversity and occurrence across Australia.

There's still a lot of ways to be involved in Insect Investigators if you're not a chosen school. We have many resources available for teachers (lesson plans, worksheets, iNaturalist species discovery projects). Go to: to find out how you can take part!

Taxonomists are scientists that discover and describe new species. Our team of invertebrate taxonomists hope to put a name to the face of every beetle, bug and bee we find. 🐞🦗🐝 We have a stellar team that have volunteered to be a part of Insect Investigators this year!
