  1. Ecological interactions between bryophytes and other groups of organisms receives little research attention, but can be a fascinating subject area, so great to see this paper published.

After a gap of 114 years, today it was a delight to refind the tropical liverwort Dumortiera hirsuta in Combe Martin (Devon, UK), with a large population scattered along the River Umber 😀 Survey for

Great new paper (free download) by Lars Hedenäs, disentangling species within the delightful moss Meesia uliginosa. Perhaps in the British hills, M. minor or M. minutissima are awaiting discovery 😀

Rare in Europe, today I was pleased to document a magnificent population of the tropical liverwort Dumortiera hirsuta in Fairlight Glen, Sussex, UK. Few fertile plants, but here are female (larger, red arrows) and male (smaller, white) organs. Work funded by

Whilst the globally rare liverwort Western Rustwort (Marsupella profunda) is a hopeless competitor, here struggling amongst the larger Marsupella emarginata, it is an exceptional colonist, producing sporophytes abundantly and bucket loads of spores. St Austell Clay Pits, Cornwall

Very interesting to see the newly described (and northern) Sphagnum divinum confirmed from two vice-counties in Wales (Caernarvonshire and Flintshire) and two in England (Derbyshire and Northumberland), in addition to the Scottish locations.

Red Listed in Europe, Norfolk Bladder-moss (Physcomitrium eurystomum) hasn’t been seen at Tring Reservoirs since 1969. Great to see it today at Wilstone Res. Immature material was seen in October, confirmed by DNA sequencing by . Work funded by

Each time I see mucilaginous algae threatening rare species such as the liverwort Leptoscyphus cuneifolius, I’m baffled we know so little about it. If it was threatening showy species (e.g. birds), we would be queueing to investigate. Hopefully much-needed research will come.
