This may be the worst week yet in terms of the failure of our democracy. The firing of many inspector generals is way worse than you imagine. We are seeing the systematic destruction of the ability to root out corruption in government if it benefits Trump and the GOP. 1/n

The IG is how we detect and investigate corruption initially. It is supposed to be impartial, but replacing the IGs with Trump cronies and loyalists mean that reporting corruption within an agency is now pointless if the person committing crimes is a Trump loyalist. 2/n

Then there's the decision to tell Congress (which is supposed to have oversight of the executive branch and the federal government) to go **** itself anytime it wants to investigate corruption reported to it. Normally, you can't do that, because the courts wouldn't allow it. 3/n

Which brings me to the court packing. SCOTUS appears poised to rule that the executive branch can tell congress to go **** itself anytime they attempt to fulfill their constitutional duty to oversee the executive branch and the federal government. 4/n

Then there's the Department of Justice, which would be responsible for prosecuting people who commit crimes of corruption within the federal government. Except... they're not doing that anymore if the person committing the crimes is friends with Trump (e.g. Flynn). 5/n

Trump promised to "drain the swamp." Most of the public hear this to mean getting rid of corruption. To his loyalists, it meant rooting out scientists and experts who held values that ran counter to GOP ideology (e.g. climate science) 6/n

Trump carried through. He's gutted our ability to conduct science based public policy. But, he has also introduced the ability for his administration to commit acts of corruption with ZERO consequences. This will only escalate if he gets a second term. 7/n

Given that they are using this invulnerability to the law to increase their power, and hang onto it, I have little doubt that if Trump wins a second term, 2020 will effectively be the last free and open general election in my lifetime. 8/n

It will also hasten the demise of the US. I doubt blue states will stick around once they realize they will never again have a say in the federal government, which will grow increasingly abusive towards them and their citizens. 9/n

It is also appearing that the Trump administration will abuse the power of the DoJ and the courts to go after Democratic politicians they view as a threat. They're threatening to try, and jail, Obama and Biden on obviously false charges. 10/n

How long before it's Nancy Pelosi and Adam Schiff? If Trump controls the DoJ, and have completely packed the courts with ideologues, do not think for a moment they won't start getting convictions if there's a second term. 11/n
