Here's the text of the bill proposed in Kentucky. It's ugly as hell, and will kill a lot of trans kids. It's also the model for states going forward. I'm summarizing it's main points in this thread. 1/n https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/lrcsearch#tabs-6 …

* It turns all government agents into mandatory reporters to the parents of a trans youth that they are trans (e.g. all teachers are legally required to tell parents if their child might be transgender) * Any mandatory reporter who fails to do so is subject to penalty. 5/n

* No government employee in Kentucky may be disciplined for expressing their opinion about gender identity. (e.g. a teacher telling a trans kindergartner they're a disgusting God-forsaken abomination that should die because trans is Satanic will be protected speech.) 6/n

Still think I'm exaggerating when I say it's 1936? 7/n

Because what trans kid will ever come out if they can't get medical care, will be turned in to their unaccepting parents, and will be powerless to stop every bigoted adult at school from verbally abusing them? 8/n

Oh, and lets not forget that the law requires teachers to turn in any student they suspect of being trans? How is a kid NOT going to end up being scarred living in constant terror of being found out? And the mandatory reporting parallels to even darker times than the 30s... 9/n

Oh, and if anyone doubts there are transgender kindergartners, or that communities will abuse them, I remind you of this. 10/nhttps://thinkprogress.org/it-takes-a-village-to-bully-a-transgender-kindergartner-67d6ec2195e1/ …

That sounds a lot like unconstitutional compelled speech. This whole thing is awful, but this seems like a particularly easy part for this awful bill to get struck down by the courts

Freedom of speech works both ways. You don't get to be in the clear for stating some horrible interpretation of a religious view while refusing an opposing view. And government mandated at that.

This one doesn't seem so bad

It's bad. There's a lot of homeless LGBT youths because they came out to their family. Safety is a legitimate concern.
