I've said this so many times. English being the least gendered language in the western world still gets their knickers in a bunch. Try any Slovak, Romantic, Germanic or Latin language for size!
This seems like a great day to remind everyone that the use of "they" as a singular gender-neutral pronoun dates back to Chaucer in the 1380s. It's always been a part of modern English. 
Shakespeare did it, too.

Right? We used singular they effortlessly until some people asked for it specifically. Now it's a question of "grammatically incorrect" when it's always been grammatically correct
