  1. What a pleasure and an honor to lead a seminar today in Fort Drum, NY, with the 10th Mountain Division of the U.S. Army. It was the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate (Colonel Robert Insani, standing just to my right). The officers are all first-rate lawyers.

  3. I saw the film. He didn’t cast a shadow, but he was clearly trying to cast aspersions.

  4. Adam Schiff just misused “heretofore” to mean “hereafter.” But then Alan Dershowitz has repeatedly misused “criteria” as a singular (for “criterion”). Can we survive this impeachment trial?

  5. Wowza. People don’t know parts of speech. Even Nobel Prize winners.

  6. “Healthcare” solves the problem. It’s the way of the future: two one-syllable words compounded.

  7. Ha! is being silly & retrograde: “child health care issues” is inferior to “child-healthcare issues.” The salutary trend to solidify “healthcare” has rocketed since 1990. Properly, the 2-word version has no hyphen as a noun phr. & a hyphen when it’s a phrasal adj.

  10. The Oxford (or serial) comma—or rather its absence—is causing great strife in the U.K. Without that comma, there’s little hope for peace, prosperity, and friendship.

  13. Had dinner tonight with Judith Martin (aka Miss Manners) in her extraordinary home in DC. She’s a national treasure—one of the great ethicists of our day. Minded my p’s and q’s. (Please don’t say anything about my too-long tie.)

  15. RIP Terry Jones. He was essential to Monty Python’s success—and not just for his falsetto when portraying lower-middle-class dowdy Englishwomen. Btw, he was also a Chaucer scholar. Condolences to .

  20. In 2014 or so, I did indeed buy 1,500 or so legal treatises from Wildy’s with publication dates from the 1500s to the 1800s. They’re treasures. In the preface to Black’s Law Dictionary (11th ed. 2019), I acknowledge John Sinkins’s generosity in selling them to me. I cite many.
