They could be registering them outside the city?

So the "everybody is buying a car" story is wrong, at least in NYC.

How many more people are registering their vehicles outside the city? How many new vehicles take up much, much more space than the old ones?

I think there was a few month period last spring when the dmv was closed which caused summer registrations to look inflated. People tend to cite the summer months as evidence.

Agreed. I've seen summer motor vehicle sales figures quoted as being way up, while actually declined if you go back to the spring. Remember, Detroit wasn't making cars for a while!

Where did you find the 2020 data?
-
https://dmv.ny.gov/statistic/2018reginforce-web.pdf … (ready-make table) and https://data.ny.gov/Transportation/Vehicle-Snowmobile-and-Boat-Registrations/w4pv-hbkt … (which I then crunched)

I'm seeing a much higher number of our of town plates than ever before -- not sure how good of a proxy registrations are for actual cars on the road
