If the Trump regime proves anything, it is that our system of government is irreparably broken. A Constitution written for 1789 simply no longer functions and cannot be amended enough to fix. We need a new constitutional convention to start over from scratch.

I say this knowing full well that the Kochs and other nefarious interests will do everything in their power to make matters worse, but we still need a new constitution. Since it won't happen anytime soon, we have plenty of time to debate the issue.

The Ford Foundation should set up a commission to study a new constitution and begin assembling the necessary materials, such as draft constitutions that scholars have already written foreign constitutions, state constitutions. Hold conferences and seminars, public and private.

One reason to prepare now is that when the final political collapse comes, it could come quickly. We need to have ideas and documents prepared in advance that can be taken off the shelf and implemented very fast, potentially.

Oh, yeah. Great political environment right now to tackle that.

That’s one of the most dangerous proposals ever. In this era when one half is embracing authoritarianism we can not afford to reopen the Constitution.

Then eventually it will collapse like the Weimar republic.

That's a bold statement but I'm inclined to agree. My thought is it seems half of Americans have no idea what America is, or they don't really like it.

This works only if the large states and large metropolitan areas are willing to play hardball, i.e. can formulate and assert credible threats to leave the union unless political power is made more democratic, and the process less plutocratic. I can't see a pathway for this.
