At an academic meeting today where an MD implied that babies born w/ambiguous genitalia should undergo surgery & be assigned a sex. You better believe my hand shot up like a light. As the only mental health prof in the room, I shared the serious problems w/such approaches.

No matter what surgeries a person with ambiguous genitalia undergoes they will be intersex. There is no reason to subject them to surgeries without their (the patients) consent. It won’t “fix them” as intersex is nothing that needs fixing anyway. Good work standing up Dr. Lawson!
