The old wives version is that babies smiling is because they passed wind. Older babies smile when they're happy, of course. The dispute was whether infants younger than 6 or so weeks could smile because 'happy' or because 'reflex'.
I just saw a new study out, scientists have proved that babies smile when they are happy. DUH. They needed proof?

Don't mock it, it just underlies that science starts with skepticism about everything. Remember when they said babies cry because they're uncovered? It's science that showed male genital cutting is PAINFUL.
