I was astonished by the number of people who swore by someone they never met. Catfishing does not spare people with advanced degrees. If anything, they offer rather involved rationales.

I was amused by the people who, having believed in
@Sciencing_bi's existence, begrudgingly came late to the realization that they had been duped, but then posed as the heroes of the story, especially to internet journalists. The timeline of tweets suggests a different narrative.Show this thread -
And I've seen very little in terms of remorse or apologies by people who were "true believers" who lashed out at doubters or people who raised simple questions.

I wonder whether we'll learn more about what happened that will change the narrative. But there is no doubt that it's still to be seen how much damage this caused in a number of areas. It might have been better to keep that foremost in our minds.

All in all, it was an interesting episode. A sad one, to be sure, and a troubling one. I learned a lot about one's investment in belief and a corresponding resistance to finding out the truth, followed by a quick shift in narrative. Take care ...
