Atlantic Ave. in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, before-and-after the street’s “widening and modernization” immediately following WWII. In the years before the widening, the neighborhoods of eastern Brooklyn began to overtake Harlem as the largest Black community in New York City.

This episode is a must listen, an approachable breakdown and discussion of this fantastic new study on "motornormativity", incl why we shouldn't give drivers and driving a free pass. Also, going to go put "got shout-out from on " on my biz cards now ☺️😎🙏

I file this in the same category as people who claim open streets impede fire trucks and ambulances but are curiously silent about what New York City's infamous gridlock does to emergency vehicle response time.

We should be sensitive to hardship cases, but it's worth asking why congestion pricing opponents aren't using this same argument to abolish tolls on the Verrazzano, Gil Hodges or any other bridge people need to cross to access hospitals like NYU Langone.

A friend’s son (FDNY) is in @nyulangone for serious surgery ( unrelated to his job). My friend is older & can’t take public transit 1.5 hrs from Queens, nor can she afford $44 for garage. Congestion pricing on top of this? You’ve got to be kidding @GovKathyHochul @AFineBlogger

This is hands down the funniest Santos lie yet. I mean, you could probably ask Bono if he recalls writing the music for Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark and he'd say, "I'm sorry, I think you have me confused with someone else."

The funny thing is that the *actual* producers of Spider-Man the Musical probably lie about ever having been involved with it.

This is absolutely brilliant, including the whole bit where puts on his ordinary person hat and questions why those who *have* to drive don't run the smallest and cheapest car they can. Worth your attention this one.

Bike parking at a Dutch secondary school: staples for bicycles with crates outside and six rows with two-tier racks for regular bikes inside. Kids don't need to be taken to school in cars. Just provide them with the facilities to go by bike, and they will! 👌 🚲 🚲 🚲 👌

Gotta love that City Hall and DOT are lumping "political opposition" in with other factors that are delaying bus/bike lane installation, such as supply chain and contractor shortages. Political opposition is the one thing the mayor can choose to ignore!

Streetsblog faced major push back from the City Hall and DOT press offices when we reported that DOT was struggling to build new bus and bike lanes because of staff/resource shortages and political opposition. Now, the Preliminary Mayor’s Management Report says, well:

Instantly one of my favorite discussions. I've thought about it a lot since we recorded it and I'm so happy it's out there for people to hear. "Motonormativity" is a hall-of-fame-level addition to the livable streets lexicon.

This kind of smart, walkable, mixed-use urbanism is illegal to build in most American cities.
Disneyland's Mickey's Toontown with a cartoon firehouse in the foreground, a curvy asphalt road and "El Capitoon" theater in the background with a marquis saying "Runaway Railway." All beneath a blue sky.
