The US has spent more than $1 trillion and lost more than 2400 troops in Afghanistan, without much to show for it http://brook.gs/2iorfqy pic.twitter.com/2kcERuTSp9

RE: "Much"? -- "In 2017, opium cultivation in Afghanistan reached a record high, with ... production of opium shot up by 87 percent to 9,000 metric tons". I guess there's that.

There's also this: Four years of failed rains have savaged the agriculture of the region, and even caused the opium crop to fall by a third this year, despite record output in 2017..To avoid starvation I gave my daughter to a man for about $3,000. https://www.cnn.com/2018/11/22/asia/afghan-child-sales-intl/index.html?no-st=1542986661 …

Just my friendly reminder that on 9/11, the terrorists won. 3000+ dead and for what? Our healthcare could have used that money, our roads and bridges could have used that money. Our air and water could have used that money (by researching and adopting renewable resources).

Afghan objective was met shortly after routing of Taliban/Qaeda from main cities –all with special ops insertion & air fire. That is the only objective still met. Rest has been just sheer waste & tragedy of thousands lost on ground. There was no need for large ground fight at all

With roughly 33 million Pashtoon in Afghanistan and upwards of 40 million in Pakistan, the lens through which we view the situation dramatically shifts. And this statistic has been hard to accept. But is critical in understanding the regional landscape.
