That is a really reassuring read. I don't think I'll ever be bothered by them again. 🙂👍🏻

True, same problem with plants, I prefer Latin but it's easier for people to understand common names. It's just one of those things I guess 🤷🏻‍♂️

You'd have to be unbelievably unlucky to get bitten by one of these! Lots of info here from

This is interesting, albeit not the best quality (pi camera) ... Our Xenesthis immanis tarantula, post moult, apparently preening itself. Not sure of the purpose

It's absolutely tiny, smaller than my little finger nail. I've decided to not bother it as that's when they're most likely to bite (if it is a false widow). Some confirmation would be nice though just incase I get any funny lumps appear over night lol

Not what we normally tweet about (tarantulas), but a positive message for those of you who struggle with arachnophobia : BBC News - YouTube videos help woman beat fear of spiders

There are some very good papers on European parasitoids of spiders, going back to Nielsen in the 1920s, Mark Shaw, Niklas Fritzen and others in more recent decades.

Acrodactyla degener or A. similis. Differences in their host ranges are not well understood. Rearing them is pretty straightforward and always recommended!

Linyphiidae, poss T. tenuis with attached parasitoid larva observed underneath scree within main woodland area of today. Very little info about but Acrodactyla quadrisculpta maybe a candidate:

It was during a contracted survey so just need to check they don't mind me discussing details. I don't imagine there will be any issue though - I'll let you know as soon as I get the green light from them!

The first UK record of Zora armillata since 1980 has certainly made a good arachnological start to the year!

Silk can be made in a surprisingly small space, (it starts out as a liquid!). A well fed spider will look very plump, as will a female with plenty of eggs. Though oval is the most common, spiders come in an amazing assortment of shapes!

As a side note I used to think these ladies were HUGE but here in Australia I have a new perspective on size. Also I used to be terribly phobic and now I ❤️ them. I got to know my “enemy”. Graded exposure therapy works!

Why are spider abdomens so large and round? Other related genus have large thorax, I can only assume it is where all the silk is made?

Last week my girlfriend made me this birthday cake with edible shield-back trapdoor . The cake also had whiskey cream filling! Definitely a keeper (gf, not the cake... which has already been consumed in its entirety).
