D-Day led to the Battle of Normandy, continuing until mid-August 1944. German forces were surrounded and destroyed by combined US, Canadian and Polish operations. US and Free French units moved to liberate Paris, by 30 August no German units were present west of the river Seine.

On June 6 1944 21st Army Group had 717,958 personnel under command, including troops from the UK, USA, Canada, Poland, France, Czechoslovakia, Belgium and the Netherlands. Personnel from across the British Empire and Commonwealth contributed across a variety of roles.

Two artificial ‘Mulberry harbours’ were towed from the UK to Normandy by sea. 🌊 Despite losing one to bad weather, 2.5 million men, 4 million tonnes of supplies and 500,000 vehicles were successfully landed. The surviving Mulberry’s remains are still visible at Arromanches.

The invasion beaches were spread across over 20 miles of the Normandy coast. British formations landing on June 6 included the 3rd and 50th Infantry Divisions, as well as 1st and 4th Special Service Brigades which contained a mix of and Army Commando units.

Approximately 159,000 troops were landed in Normandy on 6 June. Of these, 130,000 arrived on the five invasion beaches, and 29,000 airborne troops landed by parachute and glider. 🪂

The invasion on 6 June 1944 was supported by 6,939 ships and other vessels at sea, the majority of which were operated by 🇬🇧 11,680 aircraft supported the invasion, including 1,360 transport aircraft. ✈️ 🚢

Last night Defence Secretary joined veterans and Madame Gondrée at her famous cafe beside Pegasus Bridge. Madame Gondrée was a child when British Airborne soldiers landed close to her home. The capture of the Bridge was the first major strategic victory on #DDay
