If Post-Comedy just requires getting on stage, bombing, and making people feel awkward and bad for me--look out world--I'm about to blow the fuck up.
Definition of Comedy: "Professional entertainment consisting of jokes and sketches, intended to make an audience LAUGH."pic.twitter.com/1OELZwFDh8
Isn’t being funny is the sine que non of comedy? If there’s no attempt to be funny, it’s not comedy.
Not anymore. Now being not funny is comedy.
There used to be a phrase for that: bad comedy. This seems like unfunny people acting as unathletic kids acted in gym class: pretend not to be trying. But if they ever get a genuine belly laugh -like when those kids, God bless’em, ever scored -it’ll be the highlight of their day.
If you go onstage with no intention of even trying to be funny, you might be a "lecturer" or a "speaker" or a "performance artist", but unless words no longer have any meaning, you are by definition not a comedian.
Well music isn’t particularly musical any more so at least it’s consistent
Can't wait for the John Cage of comedy.
Comedy once had permission to offend in a good-natured way. Now it is preachy, vicious, and often just plain tacky in it's effort to be edgy. It is unfunny.
There will always be things at a comedy show I find less funny or not humorous at all but FFS if you're not even trying to make people laugh just call it "talking." Or advertise it as a shitty Ted talk, not as stand up comedy
What if I “identify” as a funny comedian?
Are you sure that post wasn’t secretly made by Amy Schumer?
Even if the only person amused is the comedian it has always been about being funny.
As long as Post-Comedy is happy with the Post-Audience.
Comedy w/o laughs (“post comedy”) is about to ruin comedy much like poetry w/o meter & rhyme ruined poetry as a meaningful art. Too many comedians are so politically charged that they are willfully destroying comedy as entertainment.
Interesting comparison! My Mum has argued before that completely blank verse, like obtuse prose, was a way to maintain an intellectual in-group in the face of mass literacy. It used to be that the ability to read without speaking out loud marked a clever person. Not any more.
Lastly, now that I've made up clique-claque I'm going to use it all the damn time.
So, Post-Comedy was invented by someone who repeatedly bombed on open-mic night at The Comedy Store.
