The Linux Foundation is a trade organization, it cares about what its members care about. The question isn't "Why doesn't LF care about desktop Linux". The question is "Why aren't the companies selling desktop Linux collaborating under the LF?"

Why is it tax-exempted? Seems like a front group and like churches that preach for one political party the cover is removed.

It's a 501c6, it's tax exempt because it doesn't generate a profit for shareholders. You can argue about the appropriateness of IRS code, if you want, but LF is just operating under the rules it's been given.

But my question is valid either way, why aren't desktop Linux companies collaborating under the LF?

Because you don't collaborate under and organization that's openly hostile to your use.

LF isn't hostile to desktop Linux, it's just not doing anything in that space.

But expecting LF or anyone else to go all-in on a battle that was frankly last decade’s war is simply naive.

Nobody's asking them to go all in. Just a little bit of public facing support would be a nice start. Maybe a couple of public-at-large board members would be nice.

As a trade organization, LF exists to support it's members. If it gets Linux Desktop members, then it will support them.

In that case, the Linux Foundation might consider spinning Linux development off into a separate organization, with LF having influence but not control.

Linus controls kernel development, not the LF.

By and large the Linux Foundatiin doesn’t do Linux development. It employs a few high profile folks like Linus and provides infrastructure but it does a vanishingly small percentage of overall Linux development.
