@BrideOfLinux Finally watched the Linux Sucks presentation from Brian @BryanLunduke (I hope that's the right one!) and he's made some scary observations about Microsoft, VMWare and others "buying" seats at the Linux table. Any thoughts @BrideOfLinux? I can't say I'm happy.

Yup. @Microsoft and @VMware are among the companies that shell out $500 million annually to be platinum members of @LinuxFoundation , which is basically a corporate club. The foundation offers no support to FOSS and views open source primarily as a corporate development model.

Lunduke said it also pays Linus (and I assume other lead devs) which brings me back to my fears about the way Linux has been going of late. I wish a properly funded (i.e. no corporate strings, ever) foundation could take over.

That's not likely to happen. The Linux Foundation reportedly pays Linus $10 million per year to serve as Linux's lead.

Which pretty much explains everything I've been bitching about. Ugh. I wish BSD had better hardware support. Maybe if I could get a larger rendering box (which is where all my horsepower goes) - then I wouldn't be so tied to nVidia's chips?

Trouble with BSD is that it's far behind Linux for desktop use according to some Linux friends who gave it a try and came back to Linux.

Years behind in some cases. More in others. @GhostBSD1 is excellent for beginners and really nice to use for general work but drivers are missing, fidgety and sometimes a non-starter. FreeBSD is really a server box and TrueOS looks like Windows 3.1's ugly half-cousin.

There you go. It looks as if Linux is your best alternative for the foreseeable future then. 😃

Completely (*and grudgingly*) agree. At least they all have a future - we just have to be careful not to fear leaving the ship when the pumps give out!

Remember, most desktop distro devs work hard to keep their distros free and ethical, even when they include some "non-free" software in the mix.
