Of course, I see how ridiculous that is now, but at the time I hadn't done NaNo before and legit thought I was doing something wrong because I wanted to go back to a WIP instead of doing something brand new. So here's some advice:

1. NaNo is what you make of it. If you wanna write a new thing? Awesome. If you wanna go back to a WIP? By all means. Original? Fanfic? Multiple works at once? Whatever, the entire point is to write, so write!

2. Don't be a jerk who tries to dictate how a free online writing thing is done. Don't tell someone that they're doing it "wrong" because they're not doing it your way. That defeats the entire purpose of trying to encourage folks to write.

3. If you don't hit 50K THAT'S OK! I've NEVER hit 50K, but NaNo did, at the very least, get my muses going so I could get into a writing groove. Last year I had a week where I wrote 25K words... in December, and that's cool! NaNo woke up the muses, and they went HARD in December.

4. If you spend NaNo drafting ideas, outlining stories, hell, sketching characters for a work you wanna expand later? Awesome. It's all a part of the storytelling process.

5. Find your own groove. It could be joining a NaNo group (online or at a local place, some bookstores here in the past have done NaNo meetups). It could be writing on your own for a set number of hours. Don't assume your way is "weird" if it's not the way others do it.

6. Have fun. Don't stress if you miss a day or don't meet a word count goal for that day. NaNo isn't here to stress you out or add more to your workload, it's here to help bring your ideas to life. Happy writing! (also here's my NaNo profile: https://www.nanowrimo.org/participants/brichibi …)pic.twitter.com/kA3CfVSRBJ

Thank you for this. This is my second NaNo, I'm going to try actually writing something full-length this time, and this really was reassuring.

Yes! Thank you! I’ve been doing it for a few years now and I’m not in love with my draft this year and I can’t decide to go back to last years or push through!
