Zuckerberg isn’t the CEO of Facebook. He is the first truly dangerous 21st century monopolist. Historically, you can’t deal with a monopolist by boycotts or sharply worded NYT op-eds. You have to regulate them or bust ‘em up. Anything short of that is just a feel-good measure.
2/ One of the consequences of underfunding public education is Americans don’t know our history. Zuckerberg is shockingly analogous to Andrew Carnegie, the steel monopolist. And the way we dealt with Carnegie was the Sherman and Clayton Antitrust Acts.
How do we break it up and/or regulate it to the point of safety?
We start by separating Instagram, Facebook and What’s App. And make it clear Facebook needs to improve its own product, rather than buy out the competition.
Moreso than Bezos?
Bezos is someone we need to look at. But right now, Zuckerberg is a clear and present danger to American democracy.
It’s something we need to do very thoughtfully. Because we can’t just give every Tom, Dick and Harry access to FBs data. It would be the end of all privacy.
Somehow people out side of tech see FB as something innocuous. They don't get the monopolistic power zuck had accumulated
