Brian, since so few people own most of the Bitcoins out there and can in effect set the price themselves, aren’t they going to win big here? What is the rational for futures in an opaque market (bearing in mind that the Tulip bubble was a bubble in options not actual bulbs)?

David, I hear ya. You know we are in new territory here. If math is the basis for a new asset class, Bitcoin has the game theory mechanics behind it to become the first order default. It inturn has feed the ETH market as the funding source. Interesting times sir.

There is a path dependence argument that says that even though bitcoin isn’t “best” it’s too late to change. After all, VHS wasn’t the best video standard, right?

David, indeed. I think you are on Target. At this point with the futures markets and now EFTs the institutional funds that will come in will be 1000x larger that all the years combined. For better or worse. Uncharted territory..

But on the other hand, no-one uses VHS any more either.

Dave has a point, but ... (Ratty always gives Dave a but!) ... if bitcoin, despite its deficiencies, becomes the established crypto currency it will be harder to supersede than a transient video technology. 'Money' has a huge flywheel effect that resists change

For it to survive the end of the mining subsidy it has to have real utility though. It’s not anonymous enough for the black economy, so it will have to perform some function in the real economy and it’s not functional enough
