It's especially amazing that Descartes of all people was proposing this in the early 1700s, what with him having died in 1650.

Nick, indeed. Even with 280 characters presenting the idea that the genesis of the machine age of the 1700s was started with his Cartesian dualism and Automa reductionism of the mid 1600s. Descartes started this 1700s idea.
