Makes a lot of sense from Google's perspective though - unless they could somehow know you are a subscriber, it's a poor user experience

Sure. Just shows that Google's interests are at odds with subscription model, however, which is ever more important as Google eats ads.

I don't think it's *just* Google's interest though - I think it's general web search that is incompatible with subscriptions

Christopher, I agree. Two ways this will happen sooner. Apple Pay Cash and crypto coins designed for this type of transaction.

I honestly think we'll get there first with bitcoin. I know that makes me sound like a nut but it feels like the infrastructure is coming.

Christopher, indeed I fully agree. It is a gravity in my view. Without it true journalism will go into a twilight. Nano/micro trans save it.
