Consider: millions of years ago our antecedents gave a massive sacrifice of their left hemisphere. We lost a tremendous amount of short term memory and replaced it with Broca’s, Wernicke & the phonological loop. But why? So we can—talk. Thus chimpanzees can do this—we can’t:pic.twitter.com/CDznxg37p1

Can we not do that, seems like something you could train for over the course of a few months?

David, we have been doing this research for 75 years. There has yet to be a human candidate that could come close to the average chimp in these tests.

this paper claims it is just overtraining: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/20702883/ … This isn’t my field. Is this a disputed result?

Luke, thanks for asking. The university that is doing this primate research in Japan has over 3000 studies with 1000s of subjects. It is clear that the Chimps can our perform humans with little training.

Cool, thanks! What I love about neuroscience is that I’ve been studying it for almost 25 years, and there are still such basic facts that I never knew about.

Link to refuting the pubmed article that Luke posted? Not saying you are wrong, just good practice to cite over tweet.

Dion, thank you. Good point. Lots of questions today. Here is a site to the University that presents decades of chimpanzee research in Japan. It is where the video was shot: https://langint.pri.kyoto-u.ac.jp/ai/index.html

People keep asking for a specific paper in various branches of these threads, and he keeps not giving one. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say it has not been refuted as clearly as he claims.
