Consider ReCAPTCHA: Google was digitalizing books but some words were not recognized by the OCR. So they acquire ReCAPTCHA in 2009. Thus -20-million word captchas were solved per day—Google got 84,000 free man hours a day. This saved Google billions of dollars over time.pic.twitter.com/VsQr1fv6xd

I am trying to figure if you are interested in outrage over this or you are highlighting the ingenuity.

Sidney, Thanks for asking. I am conflicted. It is both and both have a big issue. I address some of it here:https://twitter.com/BrianRoemmele/status/1212905881836253185?s=20 …

History will record that ReCAPTCHA is the largest program of free labor thus far recorded accessing the work product of millions of people ~47 seconds at a time. It is astonishing how this came about and how it appears to serve multiple purposes. ReCAPTCHA is free labor. https://twitter.com/BrianRoemmele/status/1212904046542983169 … pic.twitter.com/p6bea2nGu8

I am familiar with CAPTCHA and ReCAPTCHA. I had/ve a four decade career in computer science from academic through CTO level. That simultaneous duality of ingenious solutions is ever present. Particle-wave is simpler than these ! :)

The free labor aspect was as genius as the use of humans to do what computers were incapable of doing on their own. Von Ahn talked about how people were already wasting their time so why not put it to good use - 1st helping digitize books & 2nd tagging images to improve search

I didnt mind when it was ocr. The current iteration, traffic images, is annoying at best, and aggravating daily.
