On this date in 1947 at Bell Labs the most important discovery of the last 1000 years was fully tested. Built on the 23rd, the Christmas break stopped research. On the 26th what was tested? The first working point-contact transistor. You are using millions—right now.pic.twitter.com/kEsmY97sux

Transistors are cool, but IMHO not the most important discovery last 1k years (if anything printing press, electricity) see also last 2k year @edge 1999 q https://www.edge.org/responses/what-is-the-most-important-invention-in-the-past-two-thousand-years …

Daniel, I hear ya. You know I see the printing press as number 3 after fire. It was vitally important but it was more or less anchored to localities the physical book had a number of complications with language and physical barriers. Electrons have issues but transcend most.

Millions of billions to be more precise :) And this is in the average home, not in a lab :)

Actually zero! Nobody uses point-contact transistors any more 😉

Discovery or just an important innovation? The transistor is an electronic amplifier or switch. But the triode already existed as this for 40 yrs previously and it was based on the Audion tube invented by Lee de Forest. These tubes are still being used.
