It was 1961 and IBM introduced a revolutionary new typing technology. This is the first commercial for the IBM Selectric interchangeable ball. The design increased productivity by 35% & gave IBM a huge advantage in the higher end office market—until the PC word processor.pic.twitter.com/mNugiRtVFD

I haven’t seen one of these in years. My grandma was such a fast typist that this was the only typewriter that could keep up with her. Watching her type was insane.

Great invention, never seen this before. Did it become widespread?

They were in just about every office from the 60s to the 80s. I still can’t wrap my head around how quickly and flawlessly they work.

The inventor was our neighbor. IBM gave him an award for it - a Selectric cut in half under a glass dome. You could see all the components 👀

In High School (ca 1976), when it was publish time for our monthly(ish) humor magazine, we’d rent one of these for a week so we could type the pages with the occasional italic, bold or large-face word or line. Design matters, even on a mimeographed HS rag!
