As an also COBOL programmer working for a major international bank, this is true and it’s felt daily, hence the urgency banks have to try (and fail) to migrate to other technologies. Which ends up being a waste of money since COBOL works and is dependable and efficient.

That said, COBOL is sooo boring, it’s like that Dijkstra quote, it truly cripples the mind. It just leaves me hungry for new technologies...

I came to appreciate COBOL multi-programming environment on DEC VAX micro computer (circa 1990), but realistically these programs,if they have true business value, must be ported to programming languages & HW platform with far more support, CIO/CTO liability’s & lack of vision
