The industry is corrupt and stupid, sure. But, she signed that art away. It’s like a builder whining about not being able to use the house he built and sold.

John, I hear ya. I wish it is that simple. A young arts is confronted with the “standard” contract in the digital era that posits 1000s of financial deductions that don’t apply today. It is designed to lose. There is no leverage as long as this is “standard”.

Brian, What do you think? Do you think a hybrid lawyer-programmer specialty emerges to represent artists (and others who currently rely on middlemen) by creating digital ownership smart-contracts on a blockchain? Also

David, thanks for asking. Great idea. You know there are many ways to approach this but if we don’t fix it soon we will lose our artists. Taylor speaks for the millions that fear if they speak.

I don't know if you know this or not, but MANY artists have been talking about owning their publishing rights before Taylor.

Tyler, indeed. This is quite accurate. But none have had such an audience and microphone to make this subject become part of the public dialog. Most assume that artists own these recordings. And most don’t with deals that are ridiculous in this era-because it is “standard”.

can't the good ones do what
#GeorgeLucas did with Lucasfilm - produce the art under their own brand but use the labels as one distribution channel? I feel like there's some finance magic that can make this happen - pullman bonds? Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

the 365 deals are not a good move for any musician... it is the equivalent to Robert Johnson at that crossroads. Dont sell publishing. Keep merch rights. (As a music fan I now prefer buying direct from the artist at a gig wherever possible.) Preorder. Go to gigs. Buy merch.

I don’t find it particularly “brave” for an extremely wealthy person to use public discord to fight their legal battles with other wealthy people all for the purposes of making even more money.
