Meet the 1958 innovation, one of the first tape cassette cartridges. 4 1/2 years of R&D it gave rise to everything from compact cassettes, 8-track tapes, VHS/Betamax up to concepts that lead to MP3 systems and the iPod. It failed because of media costs compared to LP records.pic.twitter.com/vI0MKcJdLK

Thanks for asking. This RCA format failed in that epoch only to be copied a few years later and adapted to portable music players and autos as well as mid fidelity home players.
