Today I wrote + microcasted about this free Google Mini promo from Spotify: https://www.spotify.com/us/individual/
I pulled in some interesting tweets from @chrismessina, @bretkinsella, @BluegrassCap & @BrianRoemmele to help explain what's going on here.

Thanks Dave for the splendid insight! You say in your article: "Google knowing all about your Spotify consumption habits, means that it can more intelligently feed you ads." Yes, is all about advertisements, and having ads through a smartspeaker/any voiceonly device is evil

I don't buy this. Spotify is doing this simply because it helps them sell more subscriptions which for them is Job 1. They have run these campaigns in the past and they overperformed expectations. Giveaways are common and I presume Spotify paid for the devices.

Is there any significance that they're Google devices tho? That's what I'm interested in... I guess Apple or Amazon speakers weren't equally available? It's not like the Google Home Mini is a great speaker.

Well Apple devices would be too expensive for a giveaway promotion and they didn't originally offer access to Spotify...plus they would attempt to switch the user to Apple Music. Amazon would be a reasonable partner but are now number 3 globally for music streaming providers.

The competitive angle is what I'm most curious about... where can Spotify go when most of the voice assistant hardware companies offer competitive music streaming services.

Chris, Brilliant question. It is unfortunate and very simple. They have only one choice to build their own
#VoiceFirst platform or perish with a thousand cuts over the next 10 years. You, Bret and I know how to fix it. I fear they do not.1 reply 0 retweets 2 likes -

Maybe Sonos and Spotify should merge.

Apple buying Sonos to boost HomePod and interoperability with Apple Music would be ideal

Jon, indeed. It would shift the market for them. But I fear Apple is distracted from this.
