I can not stress enough the breakthrough that the amazing Google engineers achieved by fully local, in airplane mode, real-time, speech-to-text. This is magnificent work and a stunning achievement. Google Recorder is magic and—magical.https://twitter.com/BrianRoemmele/status/1184139581521743872 …

Meet Google Recorder. This is one of the biggest breakthroughs by Google in a decade. If opened with APIs a developer ecosystem will flourish around this. It is what Apple should have made 5 years ago... pic.twitter.com/cJgm18N1f0

Sorry but we've been doing offline speech to text since uhhh *checks notes* 1997 on Windows 95. It sucked initially and needed loads of training, but it worked pretty well after that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_NaturallySpeaking …

Indeed, I started this in the 1970s with the Covox device on the Commodore 64. The difference today is 98% accuracy and no need for the cloud.

I honestly think the fact that this has already been built into google translate (by downloading the offline language files) for years is way more amazing than the speech recognition by itself and has been widely underappreciated

I hear ya. You know it is the engine they built with the indexing and search engine. This is a profoundly important infrastructure that will change the way we interact with computers.

100% agree on that. The way they've condensed of thousands of machine learning years augmented with real data into a downloadable file is absolutely bonkers and may finally make our 'smart' devices actually a bit smarter
