But the importance of magnetic north notwithstanding, how would you compensate for shifts in EM fields in general in a system like you describe? Particularly since they can be impacted by a multitude of external forces?

Yes, in fact I have suggested before that the shift in magnetic north towards Siberia may well be the reason for the declines in the bee and bird populations which seems to have started in 1999 when it appears the shifting began.

Also, suicide rates have been on the increase since that time too which makes me wonder if the wandering of magnetic north could have something to do with that as well.
