Indeed. This is quite a great and interesting question. Part of this but not nearly all is related to the very rapid movement of magnetic north. So much so some airports have to rename runways and rest beacons. There is quite a lot to this.

I remember reading somewhere a few years ago that someone was suggesting that the reason the honeybee population was declining was because something had happened to damage their ability to navigate by magnetoreception, made possible by these cryptochromes.
