How similiar do you think is this to a decade ago when Nokia, Motorola, blackberry etc. tried to release their versions of smartphones after apple...

Well, we they were incumbents trying to catch up in their own industry to a trend they missed. This is different because it’s coming from a different industry. I don’t know if Ikea will succeed in this space but I can see a future where assistants are like apps. We have a few.

1/2 Another interesting question is when all these companies from different industries succeed in creating their own ecosystem, how will users choose between those voice apps? There will be an Ikea app for a smart home, or, say, Yelp app for restaurant reservations.

What if assistants are the new apps instead of the new OS? Closer to the web than the iPhone? If the tech becomes accessible enough it's entirely possible.

In fact, that is the thesis of my Voice Insider which will be out later today. I started discussing this possibility at Voice 19 when I kept hearing people say consumers can only handle one assistant!

That's like saying people can only handle talking to one person! I read an interesting blog somewhere about how data effects are no-where near as strong as network effects and assistants definitely benefit from the former rather than the latter.

In fact, if I was a prone to predictions I think it's just as likely that people will choose and customise their own assistant in the same way they would a car.

Exactly! People might want to customize one assistant rather than add dozens of branded apps to one or several devices: smart speaker, phone, car, watch, TV. So far brands all across the globe are busy dividing the market between them rather than thinking about entire CX.

@BrianRoemmele has a lot to say on this topic and does Apple's Knowledge Navigator concept from the 1980s. Your assistant will have agents that will connect with other assistants, knowledge sources, and web services.https://voicebot.ai/2019/01/21/brian-roemmele-discusses-the-last-interface-and-intelligence-amplifier-voicebot-podcast-ep-80/ …1 reply 0 retweets 3 likes -

I really loved that podcast by the way. I particularly enjoyed how both of your different perspectives helped illuminate the other's.

Tom, thank you! You know Bret is brilliant and I really loved this interaction. He has an instinct for things that is quite amazing. I feel it is one of the milestones of interactions I have had and have deep gratitude for the time he gave me.
