I'm going to echo @sshawki on this an push back on the idea that Apple is using a "new technology." They are more likely just charging a higher rate--up to 23.99%--to higher risk customers. I'm not sure what new technology would be available to them. 1/https://twitter.com/BrianRoemmele/status/1161290939442184192 …

BOOOM! An Apple Card was just issued to an applicant that had a 590 FICO score. Some call scores below 620 sub prime however Apple is using a rather new technology to help approve a wider group of card holders. This will have a profound impact to all in the banking world. pic.twitter.com/tHuBAUNvs2

I mean, what would this new technology be based on? A new risk model? What would be feeding that model? What data? And why would APPLE be tasked with that? They aren't the issuer. It's not their money being loaned. Are they a part of the issuing decision? 2

If they are part of the issuing decision, then what data is feeding a new technology that allows them finer models for determining risk? Presumably, they only have access to applicants' interactions with Apple devices and services. Would they be using that to judge risk? 3

And if they are using an applicant's interactions with Apple's devices and services to determine risk (which would affect acceptance, APR, limits), would that be appropriate? The big selling point of this card is privacy. That would seem to be very intrusive. 4

(Plus, issuers are required to explain why credit was denied. I don't think Apple wants Goldman Sachs to send out letters to consumers saying "Your device usage indicates a poor credit risk?" Or "You took too many pics of your dog." That won't sell many phones.) 5

Again, I don't see how credit decisions include anything new from APPLE. And if it IS something new for the Apple Card--from APPLE and not Goldman Sachs--then that would seem to be counter to the idea that Apple cares about consumers' privacy. And I think they do. 6/6

James, I hear ya. It abundantly important to understand that Apple is a retailer with substantial insights in its customers. Consider a 590 score with $1500 of Apple Store (Phone and contract) and App Store purchases over 5 years. Retailer insight always has an advantage.

. @BrianRoemmele Has a lot of point of sale experience. Without speaking for him, if you look at Apple Card as a PoS device and not just a credit card you might gain a different insight into your customer.https://twitter.com/BrianRoemmele/status/1161648489668857856 …

That unfortunately is the myth being professed by many #fintech companies. Their "insights" are myopic.
