Many ask about some of the folks that influenced my very early work in #VoiceFirst. A scientist at the Princeton Institute of Advanced Study showed me the 1938 MEMEX designs of Dr. Vannevar Bush. This was the first hypertext system ever built. He was building a voice interface. https://twitter.com/BrianRoemmele/status/1157689304115642369 …pic.twitter.com/8HAjZgUtkF

i don't think Bush actually built the MEMEX. another similar idea (Mondothèque) was documented by Paul Otlet about a decade before the MEMEX (1936). it, too, pre-saged the WWW: https://b.mamund.com/2GNvCFs

Mike, thanks for asking. I saw a working model of a MEMEX in Princeton. It did not look like the illustrations and used magnetic tape, microfilm and a very large computer. It was part of bigger government funded project. The Voice interface was working in a very crude way.

Mike, indeed! Sadly it was already a bit of a relic when I saw in the 1970s. It was moved a few times, disassembled and when the scientist working on it passed away parts were sold in the 1980s at the Trenton Computer Festival. I wish I had a smartphone camera in that era...

Mike, I would love to see some slide from the talk! I can not get enough of this history. It was so fascinating and so advanced.
