Google Assistant replacing Voice Search in the Google mobile app is a big deal. Means @ActionsOnGoogle have come far enough for widespread adoption. Huge for #VoiceComputing and #ConvComm!

With the limited experiment we did, it seemed to me that the biggest hurdle was the need for invocation of the action - does this mean that the assistant is getting better at triggering the right actions without explicit invocation?

Google Assistant is very good today with explicit invocations but has a long way to go on implicit. Our research suggests Google took a step back on implicit about 8 months ago and is currently rethinking or refactoring the algorithms.

When we experimented with building an action with DialogFlow, I couldn't help but feeling that the skills/actions model is a "transitory" phase - the real "leap ahead" will happen when whole conversations flows won't have to be built from scratch by a human (IMO).
