The role that I see myself playing as a patron is to recognize that a huge number of talented artists would be able to give more of themselves if only they received more funding. But for new ideas, perhaps this is like adding unpredictable nutrients into the primordial soup.

Indeed. Your artists can remain atomistic and independent, yet create a great cumulative body of art. The success of, say, a Bell Labs was result of many atoms (great and small) coming together to form superstructures, literally and figuratively! : )

But is there anything to prevent an atomistic version of Bell Labs from happening given the available technology now?

Atomistic model is difficult to sustain. Great ideas a la Bell Labs are like mating pandas--you need many pens, and many pandas, and a lot of time to see what, if anything, happens! : )

Well there are going to be a lot of rich Bitcoiners in the coming decades. We need plans and proposals to build these kinds of labs, and to convince potential funders to be enthusiastic patrons of thinkers.

If it's impossible to convince companies to fund such labs now, surely there will be Bitcoiners that understand and can afford to sponsor it.

Super hard. The governance of that entity is mind-boggling. It actually requires no governance. Intriguing . . .

It just takes one proof of concept, and then the companies will get jealous :)

@rivatez: may I ask what is your take on all this? Is it possible to bring back a Bell Labs with Bitcoiners, or even convincing the established companies to fund it?1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -
well I joined an established company to try and do exactly this... so let’s see ...
but I don’t think you can fund open ended research privately... it should stem from companies where $1bn spent on R&D every year is somewhat nominal (AT&T/ Xerox as prime examples)2 replies 0 retweets 4 likes
Riva, this is awesome! Congratulations, I know you will do some amazing things.
