So in the art world, $5,000-$10,000 is sufficient for an individual to voluntarily fund the artistic equivalent of "pure research". Is it possible for individuals to have any kind of impact in funding such lab projects? I'm thinking one patron helping one researcher.

Interesting! Guess it comes down to what the nucleus of a truly new idea (rare) is, and is it built center-out, or does it come together in part spontaneously, even via several centers-out points? Who puts the building blocks together? Not sure.
