Obviously this is suboptimal in terms of amount of data per bit, so why is this useful? Is it because it’s the easiest way to bundle meta info about the image with the image that a program can retrieve? Easier than making a new file format for sure because compatibility!

Ben, Great questions. The basis is simplicity. Each image has a contextual story in your life
#TheIntelligenceAmplifier does this automatically with#VoiceFirst ready text that rides along with an image. Thus nothing is ever lost and is always compatible with future systems. - 1 more reply

How do you retrieve the text? Are there commonly used voice programs that will "read" the image for people? Curious, because as a digital visual artist, I'm uniquely positioned to make art with audio "crutches", so to speak, for visually impaired.

Kathryn, thanks for asking! I use a number of software programs for this work. A great place to start is OpenStego. This is free and can be used to encode and decode. I think the ability to store high context and detail to almost a book level is powerful in just an image.

So.... I could take a photo of myself on holiday. Write a letter home, and encode the characters of the letter into the image and send it by email? (For example)

Andrew, indeed! You could also embed some sounds and event other images. I do all of the above. It is a simple single file compatible system. I think it is the future.

Always been fascinated by steganography. What advantage does this gartner over standard image metadata? Well you can store data pertinent to a particular object or pixel within that pixel and data is retained easily when cropping... Cool!

As long as you can strip it out when sharing you aren't exposing potentially highly sensitive contextual information about your images. Goldmine for advertisers!
